Kharjooradi mantha- a classical summer drink

This preparation is an easy to prepare summer drink that helps to resist the weakness caused during this season.It is a classical as well as homely preparation with easily available ingredients which can be used instead of the packed drinks. Ingredients: Dates(kharjoora)-1 cup Pomogranate-1 cup Grapes-1 cup Malabar tamarind(കുടംപുളി)- 2 pieces Tamarind(പുളി) -2 pieces Gooseberry(നെല്ലിക്ക)- 1 cup Sugar candy- for taste Water Method of preparation : All the ingredients except water is taken and pounded.This pounded drug is mixed with 4 times(of the pounded mixture) of cold water.Now this mixture is churned manually or mechanically until the cold water turns warm. Dose: nearly 80 ml can be consumed by a normal person. Uses: this drink is effective in case of intoxication as well as provides good strength.

Chincha panaka-a summer drink!!!

This is the time where the intensity of heat is very high and all the people are going behind cool drinks like coke which may be a temporory relief from heat and thirst but is harmful to the body. There are many references in our classical texts about summer drinks that can reduce thirst and even healthier. One such drink is chincha panaka. Ingredients: Chincha(tamarind)-20 gms water- 120 ml Sugar-40 gms salt-for taste fried jeeraka (cumin seed)powder- 2 gms fried pepper powder-1 gm Method of preparation: The ripe tamarind has to be soaked in water after removing the seeds for 1 to 2 hrs. Later it is macerated well and the liquid part is filtered. To the filtrate powders of remaing ingredients are added and mixed well. Dosage: 96 ml is the general dosage. Uses: This drink is useful in indigestion, thirst and is a good appetizer.

Why salt should not be taken in excess???

Salt is a substance which is a part of our daily food habbits.But the intake of salt in excess may cause many problems. The justification for not using salt in excess is explained in charaka samhita,vimanasthanam.           The salt is having ushna(Hot) and theekshna(Sharp) guna,it is anathiguru i.e.,Its neither too heavy nor too unctuous.Moreover it has laxative effect and also provides taste to the food.Thus the salt when used properly produces good results by acting as a good appetiser and digestive(Deepana and pachana).But when used in excess causes: *fatigueness *Weakness *Loosening of muscles *Premature baldness *Grey hairs *Wrinkles in skin
